Tips for Attorneys to Become More Productive!

The mistake most young attorneys are currently making today is the simple fact that since they did nearly all their typing in law school, they think they can save money by doing their typing in their law practice.

First let us examine the facts.

The average attorney can dictate at anywhere from 120 to 150 words per minute. Even if that same attorney could complete a 10 minute typing test an average 100 words per minute which would rank them up with most full-time transcriptionist, the simple fact is, evening these full-time professional transcriptionist will normally just average between 50 and 60 words per minute in final documentation time over a period doing an hour to 2 hour brief. So at best they’re probably just working at 50% proficiency. It is very rare when an attorney can expand his practice without some type of clerical help. Next you have the simple fact that it would be totally counterproductive and dangerous for attorney to try to type driving down the road. With a portable dictating machine or even a smart phone dictation app this is not only doable but even practical.

So it all comes down to what is the most efficient and most profitable use of the attorneys time. Unless they’re highly unusual, then being a rainmaker for either themselves or for their firm is the most important and profitable thing for them to be spending on. If they have clerical staff then it’s much more efficient for them to do their dictation and then have the clerical staff do the final documentation so they can continue to generate more client income for their firm.

In summation in this day and time if the attorney is doing their own typing then the next time they look in the mirror of their realize they’re looking at the most expensive clerical typist they ever heard of.
