How doctors can implement an EMR package without losing either patients or money!

Let us take a brief look at both the positive and the negatives of the new government mandated EMR software packages.

Positives:

1. Once fully implemented the EMR packages will allow you quick and easy access to complete patient information electronically.

2. At least currently there are quite a few government programs with grants to help the individual medical practices offset what can be considerably high cost to implement a fully integrated EMR package in both software and hardware costs.

3. After the new national healthcare laws are fully implemented the government will start fining or adding fees to medical practices that do not comply with the government mandated electronically medical records.

Negatives:

1. No matter what your EMR software package company tells you in order for the physician to complete their documentation it will require the them considerably more time to fill in the dialog box areas that are not canned drop down inserts by becoming typists themselves.

2. The physicians will either be required to become typist in some areas of the EMR package or have an in-house clerical person followed them around exam room to exam room in order to type the necessary information into the dialog boxes.

3. There will be considerable extra computer cost in either providing computers in every exam room or providing every doctor with Tablet PCs in order for them to be able to type in the information necessary.

4. After the new national healthcare laws are fully implemented the government will start fining or adding fees to medical practices that do not comply with the government mandated electronically medical records.

How Do the Doctors Best Solve the Problems Created by Going to an EMR Package!

Simply by not changing how they currently do their documentation. Most doctors currently dictate to portable dictating machine and then someone else types to documentation. This still allows the doctor to go from exam room to exam room and get their documentation done without reducing the amount of patients taken see or the time they spend with each patient, thus not negatively impacting the amount of revenue is coming into their medical practice while still complying to the government regulations. The only difference is now they can dictate to the dictating machine and a clerical person will type in the areas of the EMR package that would normally require a doctor to type. We highly recommend if the Doctor has not already gone to a digital portable for better clarity and automatic distribution of the dictation to the clerical person then that would be a fairly inexpensive improvements to the way they do their dictation.
